Anna Karenina - by Leo Tolstoy

Reviewed by Shelby Brand

A novel written in eight parts and with the period language of the time, makes for an extremely heavy read. The understanding of the story line can at times become lost and sporadically requires re-reading of sections to ensure a full understanding of the content.

In saying that, it is well worth persevering with! You just have to fumble your way through the first part, and if you can do that then you are set. It creates many interesting conversations amongst friends, especially when you discuss the feminine rising alongside the male attitudes surrounding such female evolution.

Like any novel, you will have your favourite characters and then there are those that make you smack your hand against your forehead and ask yourself out loud 'did he seriously just say that? What a di#k!'

I found making notes in the columns extremely beneficial keeping track of both romantic and familial connections, almost like mini family trees.

It is a novel that you can come and go from easily and having a break between each part and picking up something lighter to read helps to keep going.

WARNING : Not a novel to read when you are tired and in bed - the book is thick and makes quite a heavy thunk when it lands on your head.
