Catching Squid, Shelby style

Updated: Jan 27, 2022

The weather was magical this morning and warranted dragging the teen off the couch and out into the fresh air and sunshine, all within half an hour of him opening his eyes.

We set our target for Tanker Jetty and achieving a milestone, my first squid.

However, this task seemed a little harder than it first appeared. For those that are challenged with their co-ordination, jigging the rod, while winding line and letting the jig sink down, but "watch out it's not to get too close to the bottom", all while trying to avoid snagging the jig. It was all too much for me to master.

I absolutely loved how my fishing partner explained the way he chooses which jig to use... "here, what about this one mum, it doesn't matter if you lose it." Thanks for the vote of confidence kid!! After my what seemed like millionth cast, he allocated another sacrificial jig for me, this time a purple one. Now this one I liked. It was pretty.

I did take great delight though in seeing a little baby squid dart out and try and snaffle a bright yellow jig, but on this occasion, none wanted to take a bite. Perhaps they could sense that I wasn't going to eat them any way and saved us a possible inking.

All was not wasted though. We were blessed with seeing jellyfish, half a dozen sting rays, jet skis racing off in the distance on the glass flat water and we had a good couple hours to just chat away.

I learnt how to spot the stingrays... "The dark patch that's moving mum" with an eye roll in there for reinforcement. I also learnt that they move bloody fast.

Even with the super clear water today, it was difficult to capture. Once I worked out that in the brilliant daylight, and trying to look through polarised sun glasses, trying to see what I was taking a photo of was almost impossible. It was a case of 'point, shoot and hope for the best.'

Back at the car and under the Norfolk Pines, I finally found a little shade. Somewhere I could take a photo from without sunnies... so I chose 'up', naturally.

These are the moments that make my heart sing!
