"Change it up."

Updated: Apr 16, 2022

Change it up. A term that I learnt from watching the Mighty Ducks movies endlessly as a kid. in the ice hockey world it means to swap over the team members, to have those on the bench get a turn on the ice and those on the ice, have a break on the bench. This is a term that definitely helps with re-finding motivation in the exercise department.

You may love a particular activity, like walking, riding, running, swimming, the list is endless, but taking a step back and incorporating variety a little more regularly, may help to reclaim some of that passion back towards the activity. Rather than it beginning to feel like a chore. That was the point that I had gotten to last year. My home gym sessions had fallen into a major rut. I wasn't enjoying them at all, but kept with it because I knew my body needed it. Mentally, I was detached, I was going through the motions.

This year, is a whole new story, a whole new me. What worked for me was to make a list (yep, I'm one of those) of all the outside activities that I enjoy and then kept that list on the stand beside the bed, right near my alarm, providing me an easy reminder that even though at 5:30 in the morning, yes, I do love these activities. Just pick one already. I don't resort to eenie meenie miney mo or anything, but I kinda just put the internal feelers out and see which one resonates more with me in that particular moment. Some days I crave a bit of music, so a walk it is. Other times, I need just a little ease into the day with some zen moments on my mat. And at times I crave the ocean, so off on my bike I go.

Perhaps it's event he drawcard of taking early morning photos that lead the way with how I get there. In my world, seeking tranquility doesn't involve taking the vehicle anywhere. Generally, I lean towards my bike in those moments. Arriving at such a flexible fitness routine of a morning, came by making one small, routine change. To do yoga one morning a week. It felt like I was cheating on the gym workout. But one thing lead to another, and bit by bit, I began craving more variety.

My zest for my daily fitness is back!

I wonder what change you might make to reclaim yours?
