Jilted - by Rachael Johns

A REVIEW - *****

Another brilliant read from Australia’s queen of women’s fiction.  Set in the small country town of Hope Junction, Jilted, does not disappoint.  The story follows Ellie and Flynn, who, a lifetime ago were due to wed.  Time has not stood still for either one, however, current events draw Ellie back, placing them in close proximity once more.

Johns’ writing style ensures the reader is surrounded by well-structured story lines, eliciting emotional responses throughout and encourages the reader to challenge their own understanding of what makes a family.  Strong descriptive language is used throughout encouraging a deeper dive into the world of Hope Junction.

I laughed, I cried and often found myself egging the characters on from the side lines.  The characters’ lives were intricately woven together and although there were plenty of characters to enjoy, my favourite would have to be Matilda.  A pivotal character at the heart of Hope Junction’s community, Matilda provided many laughable moments and relatable lessons.  A pillar of strength for Ellie to lean on and learn from.  As I had already read The Road to Hope, I enjoyed the cameos of the characters I had previously ‘met’.  Although I read them out of order, this did not subtract from the enjoyment of the story.

I have plenty of books on my TBR pile, perhaps finishing off Man Drought might be my next one to tackle.
