Over the Hill & Up the Wall – Todd Alexander

A REVIEW *****

Having read and LOVED both 30 000 bottles of wine and a pig called Helga and You’ve got to be Kidding, I eagerly awaited the release of Over the Hill & Up the WallIt was one of those books that provided a somewhat nostalgic kick for me, each three titles purchased from the same bookshop Paperbark Merchants – Albany, whilst visiting my favourite mini-break location of Denmark, WA.  Under normal circumstances I would have started reading the book while I was there, but it just didn’t feel like the right time.  I’m glad I listened to myself and waited.

Over the Hill & Up the Wall was the first book to reach my carry-on bag when medical flights were required - Nothing dramatic, just a finger needed some stitching with a full recovery to be had.  However, an air of uncertainty, and anxiety had settled in about navigating a true city medical system, it wasn’t the time for taking chances on a new author.  I needed a safety net.  An author whom I knew wouldn’t leave me hanging with unmet expectations.  Thank you, Todd Alexander, for being that safety net.

Once again, I adored his writing style.  Humorous and at times ruthless (his poor parents) with plenty of opportunities to nod the head and whisper, ‘ain’t that the truth.’  I was taken on a journey filled with family love and adoration, alongside a deep understanding of one another as individuals.  The connection that he made with his parents was admirable, if not inspirational.  Plenty of emotions were explored, both of others and of himself, not unlike a critical reflection of one’s life.

I was provided with a timely reminder that despite my own frustrations, one day my own strong-willed children will be standing where I am now, living the very frustrations that I have today.  So, I better set a bloody good example for them, better yet, perhaps I should start researching the retirement villages for them and narrow it down to make their selections easier when the time comes.

If you are at a point in life where you require a little pick me up, grab a copy of Over the Hill & Up the Wall for yourself and delve into the humorous life of Todd Alexander.  And if you haven’t read them already, complete the trio and grab 30 000 bottles of wine and a pig called Helga and You’ve got to be Kidding while you’re there.
