Peace, Love and Khaki Socks – Kim Lock

A REVIEW - 4.5 STARS

A unique and compelling read that follows the pregnancy journey of Amy and her army beau Dylan. Beautifully written capturing the uncertainty and sometimes difficult moments faced upon a positive pregnancy test. Amy’s journey opened up an alternative view through the world of pregnancy and explored a raw and somewhat nurturing approach to femaleness.

I thoroughly enjoyed Amy’s not so perfect friendship, her sassy banter and emotional openness. Amy’s strength and resilience shone when despite others’ opinions, she stood her ground. The overall feel to the story would have been weakened should her journey have taken a less conflicting path. A great reminder to stay true to yourself and follow your inner voice.

The combination of the cover image and title had me intrigued as to where the story would head, even before turning to page one. When a single image such as this takes me on a mental journey, it becomes a must read, regardless of the blurb. When the khaki socks turned up in the story line, I chuckled at the necessity of them, and this small snippet was one of many character attributes that made them all so realistic and relevant to everyday life.

Dylan’s journey when compared to Amy’s is one of difference, but not too far removed that men of the real world wouldn’t find it relatable. This is definitely a title for newly pregnant couples that could be read simultaneously and discussed together.

I would have loved a little insight into how Dylan felt about it all at the end of the story. I may have missed this, in my own childbirth flashbacks, but with a quick skim read, I couldn't track it down.

It’s a toss-up whether to read The Good Mother, The other side of beautiful, The fancies, or The three of us next.
