Summer Party – by Rebecca Heath

-A Book Review

A real Cluedo style novel that kept me guessing right until the very end. The twists and turns between the characters, left me at times scratching my head and thinking – Wow, I didn’t see that coming.

A well written story with plenty of suspense, wonderment and moments of passion, though my favourite moment was at the very end when Lucy gains closure from the somewhat teenage-hood event. Along the way though, protagonist Lucy mentally muddles her way through clues, lies and deceptions to attempt to piece together what really happened ‘that night’. It made the moment of closure that much sweeter to read for her.

I felt for Lucy in several ways, I can’t fathom what it would be like sorting through a lifetime worth of possessions belonging to a family member. How would you ever really know what to keep and what to let go of. I would be concerned I would let something go and then endure regret that I’d made the wrong decision.

Easy to read, however, keep an eye on the dates and the chapter titles so you understand whose point of view you are about to read. I did have to flick back a couple times to ensure I was cataloguing my opinions of the characters correctly. Then and now viewpoints of multiple characters can get a little blurry at times, but that might just be me.

My favourite moment of the book was when Lucy eventually sees things a little clearer and can let go of her teenage impressions of that summer and her fantasies about life being greener on the other side, a pivotal moment for her character development, one which I resonated with. Perhaps these are moments a lot of people experience, learning from moments that we experienced 10 years ago, 20 years, or more. I know I sure have. A believer that each life experience we live through provides just that little more clarity and understanding of our true selves.

A must read for anyone who enjoys not knowing what’s around the corner.
