The Buchanan Girls – Emily Madden

A Book Review

* * * *

I haven’t read many dual timelines, especially not ones that made quite the impact of The Buchanan Girls. On more than one occasion I found myself becoming lost within my thoughts whilst pondering a line, a paragraph or even a mere moment from the story. However, when I found myself staring at the page with my hand over my mouth shaking my head softly mouthing the word ‘no…’ I recognised then that a shiver had run down my spine accompanied by goosebumps on my arms. I wonder if you too will have a similar reaction, and if so, whether or not it is for the same pivotal moment.

The vivid and detailed descriptions from the war era story line transported me to another time and place. I adored the colourful connections created amongst the Wassie girls and the depiction of the Yanks as they played alongside the Aussie boys in more than just sport. Although we don’t hear from Gwen’s point of view, she quickly became one of my favourites, through the eyes of Ivy, and later, Madeline. With her spunk and ability to call it as she saw it, Gwen captured my attention as she provided words of wisdom on more than one occasion.

If you enjoy a touch of drama, intrigue and romance this book is sure to keep you turning pages until the very end, and I will be sure to check out Emily’s other books, Summers with Juliette, The Lost Pearl and Heart of the Cross.
