The Drifter – Anthea Hodgson

A REVIEW - SOLID 5 STARS

A book that is sure to find a place in your heart for a very long time to come!!

I picked The Drifter up off my TBR pile thinking ‘just another rural romance, it’ll be a nice easy read.’ How wrong did I get it!!

I spent a good part of the story reading through my falling tears and wiping them onto my sleeve as they cooled on my cheeks. And I’m not just talking an odd tear here or there, I’m talking full on sniveling, masses of tears and a nose clogged with snot. Just when I thought I was through the worst of it, bam, another fresh set of tears caused by yet another heart wrenching story line.

Each and every character that came about in the story held a description of perfection. I could picture them immediately, their place in the small wheatbelt community and their connection to the family farm.

Cate, the protagonist, was brought to life through her actions and consequences. I was captivated by her personal growth throughout the story and how she learnt to put others before herself, despite inner anxiety and turmoil. The journey that Cate travelled in order to find peace with her demons is heartfelt and inexplicably real. From the minute she opened her eyes of a morning, to the moment they drifted closed of a night, I was there with her, drawn into her world through captivating dialogue, applaudable narration and deeply felt emotions.

Cate’s world was deepened through the relationships she formed, at first out of necessity, then later out of love and commitment. Cate’s story would not have been as remarkable without her Aunty Ida, or ‘swagman’ Henry. The trio navigated love and loss many times over, warming to the idea of fulfilling end of life requests, despite possible repercussions.

Having read the final page of this incredible story, tears spent, I feel an immense amount of closure, for not only the book itself, but for Cate, Aunty Ida and Henry. I will definitely need a day or two before I pick up her next book from my TBR pile, The Cowgirl.
