The Farm at Peppertree Crossing – Léonie Kelsall

A REVIEW - X X X X X

I couldn’t have said it better than Karly Lane’s quote on the front cover which described this as a book that will “keep you turning pages late into the night.” I began reading this as part of research for a book retreat and I was determined to read a few chapters of every author attending. However, towards the finish line, this one derailed me ever so slightly, true to the cover promise, I couldn’t put it down!!

Alongside protagonist Roni, I was taken on a journey of endurance, commitment and personal growth. A likeable character with relatable qualities and challenges, Roni displays the true-blue Aussie grit as she battles her way through a variety of challenges and learns of her family history through her deceased Aunt Marian. Along the way, Roni embarks on a tree change of sorts and meets a mish mash of small-town locals who appear to know more about her family tree than she does herself.

A story of small country town endurance and resilience, with a splash of romance for good measure, the high-level quality of scene setting, and character development ensure that you are left with firm images of the characters and can truly feel the emotions alongside them. I felt that the story tied all loose ends together, not leaving anything unfinished, what I am left with is a want of reading more Léonie Kelsall novels. The Farm at Peppertree Crossing moved at a great pace, revealing just enough about the characters along the way to spark wonderment and the deeper knowledge we gained of Roni had me hoping ‘will this be her happy ending?’

I will be sure to pick up a copy of Léonie’s The Wattle Seed Inn, The Rivergum Cottage and recently released The Willow Tree Wharf.
